Village located 6 km away from Nazar\u00e9, next to the Oeste railway line and the access point to the A8 motorway, it is the second largest parish of the municipality, with around 3,100 inhabitants, spread over 18.37 km2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Archaeological finds attest to the Roman occupation of the area; however, the settlement of the village seems to have only actually started in the 13th century, with the draining of Pa\u00fal da Cela (bogland) at the request of King D. Dinis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Valado belonged to Pederneira, and was therefore within the lands of the Coutos de Alcoba\u00e7a, having therefore been populated and developed by the Cistercians monks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The origin of the name Valado derives from \u201cveiled\u201d or \u201cto watch\u201d, as there was a monk in charge of watching over the fields belonging to the Monastery, according to the opinion of some scholars; according to others, the toponym derives from \u201cvallo\u201d or \u201cvallu\u201d, a Latin word that can mean both defence and irrigation work or land division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A presen\u00e7a dos frades deixou marcas vis\u00edveis na vila, para al\u00e9m do nome da localidade. Foram os cistercienses os grandes impulsionadores da drenagem dos campos (antigos p\u00e2ntanos e pauis, deixados pelo recuo do mar, que outrora cobrira a regi\u00e3o), e da sua adapta\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 agricultura. Aqui instalaram uma das 10 granjas agr\u00edcolas dos Coutos, na qual fundaram, no s\u00e9culo XIV, uma \u201cEscola de Engenharia Hidr\u00e1ulica e Agr\u00edcola\u201d, na Quinta do Campo – hoje transformada numa bel\u00edssima unidade de turismo de habita\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
O Valado actual \u00e9 uma vila din\u00e2mica, onde a explora\u00e7\u00e3o agr\u00edcola intensiva de minif\u00fandios \u00e9 a base econ\u00f3mica da popula\u00e7\u00e3o, sendo a ind\u00fastria da cer\u00e2mica, porcelana e faian\u00e7a (utilit\u00e1ria e decorativa), o outro grande p\u00f3lo de desenvolvimento da freguesia. A instala\u00e7\u00e3o de uma \u00c1rea de Localiza\u00e7\u00e3o Empresarial veio dar uma novo impulso econ\u00f3mico \u00e0 vila, criando ao mesmo tempo v\u00e1rios postos de trabalho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sporty and socially very active, the village has the necessary infrastructure to practice various sports: roller hockey; skating; basketball and indoor soccer.
