R. Fonte Nova 24-3, Sítio, 2450-065 Nazaré
The Wall was constructed to protect the urban agglomeration from the sand storms coming from the west and north.
The construction of the Sítio’s Wall began in 1736 and was finished in 1750.
Built in stone, with passages in full arch in some streets, it surrounded part of the historic centre of Sítio da Nazaré.
Several of the existing doors had to be bolt to keep the sands out, annulling at the same time its versatility as wall of protection and access to the cultivated fields that existed to the west and north.
Around 1750 Sítio found itself almost submerged by the sands brought by northerly winds, with houses and fountains buried, being frequent to see the inhabitants leave their houses by the roofs for not being able to exit by the doors and windows. In 1753 a great part of the wall fell and it was repaired in January and February 1754. This construction did not stop the invasion of the sands which led to the planting of the pine forest north of Sítio.
