Praça Sousa Oliveira
The development as a bathing beach and the increasing importance of the fishing industry in town has led to the creation of the Port Authority of Nazaré on April 18th, 1895.
In 1898 a petition was sent to Queen Amelia, who was President of the Institute of Shipwreck Rescue, requesting the installation of a lighthouse at the Fort of S. Miguel Arcanjo, a life-boat and some lifebuoys. In 1906 the Institute of Shipwreck Rescue acquired the former House of the Friars in Praia da Nazaré, and on July 4th, 1908, it was settled in here the Port Authority of Nazaré. The inauguration of the Life Saving Station, as well as the launching of the lifeboat "Our Lady of the Desperate" which was specially built to serve on this beach, happened in 1909.
The setting of the Port Authority and the introduction of other maritime improvements had a multiplier effect, attracting public and private institutions, and population, leading to the development of the beach in the early 20th century.
Quickly Nazaré became one of the largest artisanal of fishing ports of Portugal, served by those who were considered the most laborious and bold fishermen our coast.
