Avenida Circular Norte, 2450-100 Nazaré, Leiria, Portugal
The old white facade of the old elementary schools on Nazaré beach, facing one of the busiest roadways, has given way to a new mural, by Tamara Alves and YZ Yseult Digan.
The collaborative work of these artists, renowned for their mastery of painting and drawing, is a dialogue materialized in a large mural, combining their different languages into one. This artistic manifestation comes within the scope of the 2022 Cruzada Season by Underdogs and its “(without) borders” project.
According to the project, “in terms of concept, the inspiration lies in Nazaré and its traditions, namely, the century-old tradition of dried fish. This tradition may be at risk and we believe that exposing it to everyone can help raise awareness of its preservation”.
The piece, “appears with the intention of being an extension of the permanent exhibition of the Cultural Centre of Nazaré, with the essence and information about the preservation and promotion of the dried fish tradition”. The painting is divided into 2 parts. On the left side is the intervention of the French artist, YZ, who painted the portrait of one of the female dried fish sellers at Praia da Nazaré. On the right side, the Portuguese artist, Tamara Alves, painted the other half of the face, a young female figure, without identity. The two halves represent the relationship between old traditions and new generations.
YZ seeks to question the loss of ancestral traditions and what would be the present and the future if these traditions remained so active. In turn, Tamara Alves represents the new and future generations, those who were born in a world with more opportunities, where there is a concern to create new narratives and where women have control over their choices.
