Cod Fishing
The long campaigns on ships dedicated to cod fishing left deep marks on several generations of men from the Portuguese coastal communities. Departures and returns to ports were always intense moments, full of emotions, between tears of longing and smiles of reunion.
The harshness of life at sea and the human losses contributed to building an important part of the history of cod fishing. Many fishermen from Nazaré (especially between 1930 and 1974) embarked on this adventure, driven by the hope of a better life. Faced with the instability of local fishing, the colonial war and the poverty that seemed inevitable for the fishing class on dry land, cod fishing campaigns emerged as a viable alternative for many Nazarenes.
This exhibition features photographs, videos and accounts from those who took on the challenge of fishing for cod in distant Newfoundland. In adverse and dangerous weather conditions, these men worked up to 15 hours a day. When they set out in the small dory, they went alone, with only the sea for company and the hope of filling the boat with as much cod as possible. The exhibition seeks to portray the harshness of those times, experienced by thousands of men and their families. Visit us and discover the memories and stories of a past that, although distant, still lives on in the memories of many.
The exhibition will be on display at the Nazaré Cultural Center building from April 12 to June 29.
