Praça Bastião Fernandes, 2450-060 Nazaré
In Pederneira, at Bastião Fernandes Square, near the Parish Church, we find the former Town Hall.
It is a good example of a civil building with a large and rectilinear façade, decorated with 17th century elements. Above the main door we can see a pediment with the national arms.
The origins of the current building are somewhat obscure, because it is a property presumably rebuilt, which would have replaced an earlier one. Proof of the reconstruction in the late 18th century is the bell tower which was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.
Until 1855 was installed here the Town Hall, since then it had several functions like: Courthouse and other offices, Prison and Butchery, and even primary school was held here. In 2005, the whole building underwent re-qualification works in order to transform and adapt it into a polyvalent space with capacity to house leisure and cultural activities.
It is classified as Municipal Interest Monument since September 12th, 1978.
