Av. Manuel Remígio
Located in Avenida Manuel Remígio, the building was inaugurated on December 24th, 1958 and here functioned the Fish Auction Market until March 1987.
Here, the fish was placed on a rough stand and was sold in auction by the officials of the Central Board of the Fishermen's House, in descending order of price. A characteristic of this auction was the word "chui", which was used here to indicate the purchase of the fish. When the buyer shouted "chui" received a password, with the number of the corresponding box of fish, through a long cane.
The fish auction market of Nazaré was the first auction of the country where the fish began to be sold by kilo and not by unit.
With the construction of the harbour (in 1983), the fish auction moves to the harbour facilities (where it opens on April 29th, 1987), where it is already equipped with a computerized system of auctioning.
The "Old Fish Auction Market" gave way then to the current Cultural Centre of Nazaré which opened its doors to the public in 1995, being a space that hosts temporary exhibitions and other cultural activities.
The building’s interior and exterior are decorated with azulejos panels about fishing created by Gallardo and manufactured in the famous tile factory Aleluia in Coimbra.
