Rua De São Gião, 2450-227 Nazaré, Distrito de Leiria, Portugal
The Church of São Gião, located in Quinta de São Gião, parish of Famalicão, has been classified as a Monument of National Interest since 1986, having recently received restoration and requalification works.
Access to the property is via a dirt road, starting from the Ponte das Barcas area to the Church of São Gião.
It is one of the oldest churches in Portugal, according to the various research works carried out there, which revealed traces of human occupation from the Roman period to the 18th century.
The archaeology works carried out there made it possible to foresee an occupation of São Gião, after the Muslim period, from the 12th century to the 18th century, when the church was closed for worship, but not the place of São Gião for social and economic use.
It played a role in bringing together monastic and non-monastic communities, not only for its cultic function, but more specifically for the natural conditions that the place offered for the survival of all those who settled in that place.
