Largo da Praça de Touros, 2450-065 Nazaré
The tradition of bullfighting in Nazaré dates at least from the 18th century always associated with the festivities in honour of Our Lady of Nazaré, of which it was one of the highest points.
The non-existence of a stone bullring, led, every year, to improvised arenas, made of wood, which were built on the spot of the celebrations, near the Sanctuary.
The present arena was built in 1891 after a devastating fire that destroyed the previous one.
Inaugurated in 1897, it was designed by the architect Francisco da Silva Castro in Neo-Moorish style, polygonal plan with 2 floors, having the second floor a circular plan, the bullring has benches on both floors, with some boxes on the upper floor. It can seat about 5,000 spectators.
Annually the Bullring of Nazaré, which belongs to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Nazaré, receives, during the summer months, the country's most respected toreros in great bullfights. The arena is sometimes used for other cultural events.
